Today we dropped off our application (and a fairly hefty deposit) for Piper to be placed on the waiting list at Austin Montessori School. The more we hear about the school the more excited we get. As the admissions counselor told us it's not for every parent. There are some fairly unorthodox (though reasonable to us) expectations for students and parents. Some of the more notable ones include: no TV at home before the child is six, no clothing with any sort of product endorsement, this includes things like Nike and Gap, but also Elmo, Barney, and Dora, parents are also asked not to pack any food for the child that is "processed" or that contains any added sugar. Some of these items will take some getting use to (TV!), but after hearing the explanation for these and others we were completely sold on all the school's practices. If you would like to read more about the Montessori method and this school in particular you can download the attachment below. I'm sure some of the practices and terminology will have the more conservative of you rolling your eyes, but the school has an outstanding reputation and Kris and I have been very impressed with the older students that we have met. The school currently has a year and half waiting list, however Piper's placement is also dependent upon our attending periodic information seminars that the school puts on. The first of these is next Tuesday. I'm looking forward to it. (song: Rock-n-Roll High School by The Ramones)
